Featured Client - Paul
One of the McKemy CeRecycling_pics_023nter's quieter employees, Paul is pensive but very friendly. "Once he brings you into his circle," says Terry Haisten, a staff member, "then you're always there. He will always care about you." Paul has been working at the Center for four years, and most enjoys it because of the people. "It's a nice place to come visit friends," he says.

Paul lives at the Whitehall group home with his coworker, Tim C., and two other roommates. Every weekend, however, he goes home to visit his mother, step-father, and three siblings in Hazel Green, Alabama. There, he especially loves to go fishing with his step-father.

Outside of work, Paul exercises, watches television, and plays video games. He is also regular churchgoer and likes gospel music, as well as country. Most of all, Paul enjoys spending time with others, whether his family, his roommates, or his coworkers.

Featured Client - William
100_0242A long-standing member of the Arc recycle program, William is known as an earnest worker. "William is ready to work all the time," says Kirk Jones, manager of the Center's recycling program. William's friend, Rodney, says, "This man works fast. He'll make you sweat."

He's also one of the friendliest workers at the Center, which is no small accomplishment. "William is always in a good mood," says Jones. "He's easy to work with." For William, his coworkers are the best part of the job. "I like the people," he says.

In his free time, William enjoys bowling, watching movies, and especially watching sports on television. He follows wrestling, basketball, and football. William has also been running in Special Olympics Track and Field for four years. "He's a great runner," says Jim Vest, who volunteers at the Center. "He's real fast."

Featured Client - Russell
100_0295Russell is known around the Center as an eager and conscientious worker. "He's a hard worker," says Rodney, who also works at the Center. Betty Philips, a staff member, says that he's very well mannered. "He gets along with everyone."

Born and raised in Utah, he moved to Huntsville at age 17, when his father took a job here. Since then, he has held a number of jobs, including working for the Huntsville Stars. "I like it here," he says. "I've got good friends here." Russell now lives in Madison with his brother and Dwayne, a coworker.

Outside of work, Russell plays basketball and spends time at home following his two favorite sports: Nascar and professional wrestling. He especially likes Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Hulk Hogan. Russell also likes to sing at the McKemy Center's Song Fests. "He has a really good singing voice," says Terri Haisten, a staff member at the center.

Featured Client - Greg

100_0298A newcomer to the McKemy center, Greg has been working there for little more than a year, but he is already fitting in well. “I like it,” he says. “I have an opportunity to…meet a lot of friends.” Jeff Kingston, who supervised Greg, says he’s a dedicated worker: “He prefers to be working rather than not working.”

Not only is Greg a recycle sorter, he also has a job at Belk as a greeter. He says he enjoys meeting so many friendly people. “He’s very personable,” says Kingston. Although he was born in Huntsville, Greg lived in Birmingham for 11 years before returning home to spend more time with his family.

In his time off, Greg goes to baseball games and watches them on television. He cheers on the Atlantic Braves, he says, out of southern pride. Greg loves listening to music, as well, especially Journey - and any country music. “I’ve got all kinds of favorite artists from country,” he says. He also competes in the Special Olympics, and won the wheelchair race at the 2009 Summer Games.

Featured Client - Scott
scottAlthough he's a hard worker with the Arc recycle program, Scott is known to be very mellow. "He's really laid back," says Mary Montague. "He just goes with the flow." Scott is very considerate of his friends, and very generous towards them. "He's kind of protective of his friends," says Terri Haisten.

He is also very passionate about music. "I like all kinds of music," he says, particularly country, rap, and Elvis. His favorite song is Achy Breaky Heart, by Billy Ray Cyrus. He also plays the guitar, and sometimes travels with his brother, James, and his band.

Scott lives with his parents here in Huntsville, his hometown. He spends his free time helping around the house, spending time with his family, and exercising to keep fit. When he can, he goes to the beach and fishes.

Featured Client - Ruby

RubyOne of the friendliest faces at the Arc is Ruby's. "Ruby has a smile that lights up the room," says Linder Gilmer. "She's very positive," says Kirk Jones, who is in charge of the recycling program, "very interested in what's going on."

Outside of work, Ruby spends time with her sister, who works at Redstone Arsenal. She helps out around the house, and they play games and go to the gym together. Ruby's favorite hobby, however, is fashion. She loves to spend time shopping and having her hair done. She also takes the time to notice and compliment others' style.

Each year, Ruby helps out at the Arc's Annual Mike Scherer Memorial Golf Benefit by handing out gift bags to the participants. She also competes in the Special Olympics Summers Games, in track and field and bowling.

Featured Client - Tim
TTim_Cim enjoys spending time working for the Arc recycle program. "I like working here," he says. "I get to visit friends." Tim has a reputation at the Center not just for being outgoing, but for being a talented comedian. "He loves to tell jokes," says Terri Haisten, a staff member.

Tim lives with two roommates. One, Paul, also works at the McKemy Center. They're become very good friends. "Paul keeps me straight, I keep him straight," says Tim. Each week, he returns to his former home in Decatur to visit his mother.

At home, Tim spends time with his roommates, watches gospel music on television, and exercises. When the weather is warm, he rides his bicycle around town. Tim also likes playing video games, especially on his Nintendo Wii.

Featured Client - Austin
100_0297Austin is a relative newcomer to the McKemy Center. He has only been working there since 2009, when he moved to Huntsville. Austin is originally from New Mexico, but between then and now he has seen much of the world traveling with his father, an officer in the U.S. Air Force. Austin has been everywhere from Texas to Alaska, from Germany to Japan.

So far, Austin is enjoying his time at the Center. "You meet different people," he says. Staff member describe him as a hard worker, as well. "He likes to be busy," says Mary Montague. "He's very particular about his work."

Like many of his fellow employees, Austin loves music. "Any kind," he says, "rock, rap, country..." He also follows soap operas and reality shows on television. His favorite is American Idol. Finally, Austin likes to go shopping, mostly for electronics. This year, he started an ongoing watch collection.

Featured Client - Glenn
glennGlenn is a born musician. A guitar player and a singer, he performs at every McKemy Center talent show or Song Fest. "Glenn has an incredible voice," says Susan Klingel. Now and then, when Microwave Dave and the Nukes perform there, Glenn plays and sings along with the band for the entire show. Jim Vest, who volunteers at the Center, says, "He's an incredible guy. He is a musician all the way."

Glenn is popular at the Arc. "Glenn is friends with everybody," says Terri Haisten. "I like it alright," he says. "The people are nice." Not only does he work hard on the recycle route, but Glenn volunteers to help step up and take everything down at the Center's special events.

Unsurprisingly, Glenn dedicates most of his free time to his love of music. He practices, listens to music, and watches country on television. Jim Vest sometimes drives Glenn up to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, where he dreams of one day performing. Glenn also competes in the Special Olympics, in track and field and bowling.

Featured Client - Sally

sallieNobody is more positive than Sallie. Energetic and always smiling, she is an enthusiastic worker at the Arc. "I love playing with all my friends," she says. "Sallie gets along with everyone," says Betty Phillips. The staff describes her as very helpful, too, always taking the time to lend a hand to her fellow recycle workers or members of the staff.

Music is a big part of Sallie's life. She loves to sing and dance whenever bands play at the McKemy Center. "Sallie is a dance machine," says Susan Klingel. Sallie also likes to show off her musical knowledge in trivia contests. "She knows her music history probably better than any person I've ever met before," says Jim Vest, a volunteer at the center. Country music is her favorite.

Other than listening to music, Sallie likes going out to eat with friends and visiting her family. She also enjoys watching television, especially Lifetime. Her favorite show is Walker, Texas Ranger, but her favorite actor is Jack Black.

Featured Client - Rodney

RodneyEveryone at the McKemy Center knows Rodney. "He loves talking with people," says Kirk Jones, who is one of the recycling job coaches. "He's very personable." Linda McLin agrees: "He's very outgoing," she says, "Willing to share whatever he knows with you [and] to assist the staff."

Rodney also works at Huntsville High School, where he has managed the Varsity Boys' Basketball team for the past 20 years. "It's a lot of work," he says, but he is known at the school for his wild, enthusiastic behavior on the court - so much so that the team is referred to as the Krazies.

Sports are a big part of Rodney's life. In his spare time, he plays basketball, football, and golf. Before he worked at the McKemy center, he was even a groundskeeper for the Huntsville Stars, and once had the chance to meet Michael Jordan, who sat next to him at a game. Rodney also competed in the last Special Olympics Summer Games, in golf.
